Quick start
How to find your way around Scriptorium, step by step.
The two modes
- Notepad: just the text and tabs, with automatic word wrap. No left bar, no line numbers: like Windows Notepad, only more comfortable.
- Code: folder explorer, find in files, line numbers, minimap, suggestions, code folding, preview.
- To switch: the button at the bottom left of the window, or Ctrl+Shift+M. Opening a folder switches to Code mode by itself. Scriptorium remembers the last mode you used.
A tour of the screen
- Left bar (Code mode): Explorer (the open folder), Search (Ctrl+Shift+F), Extensions (Ctrl+Shift+X), then your pinned folders (see below), and Settings at the very bottom.
- Tabs: click to switch, click the cross or middle-click to close, drag to reorder, right-click for the menu. A golden dot instead of the cross = unsaved changes.
- Status bar (bottom): mode, folder, line and column, indentation, encoding, line endings, language, zoom. Each one is clickable to change it.
- Menus: File, Edit, View, Help. They follow the language chosen in Settings.
Open and save
- Ctrl+N new file · Ctrl+O open · Ctrl+Shift+O open a folder · Ctrl+S save · Ctrl+Shift+S save as · Ctrl+Alt+S save all.
- Drag a file or folder into the window to open it. A file opened from Windows Explorer arrives in the already open window.
- Nothing is lost: on exit, all your tabs, even unsaved ones, are kept and come back next time. Auto save is available in Settings.
- If a file is changed elsewhere while you have it open, Scriptorium reloads it (or asks what to do if you had changes).
- Encoding and line endings are kept as they are (UTF-8, UTF-16, Windows-1252; CRLF or LF). You can change them in the status bar.
Move and organize your files
- In the explorer, drag a file or folder onto a folder to move it. Hold Ctrl to copy it instead of moving it.
- A collapsed folder opens by itself if you hover on it. Dropping in the empty area (or on a file) files it in the matching folder; dropping at the root = the open folder.
- Open tabs follow the moved file, nothing is ever overwritten (if the name already exists, Scriptorium refuses), and a folder cannot be put inside itself. Right-click: new file, rename, recycle bin.
Move around fast
- Ctrl+P: go to a file of the open folder by typing a few letters of its name.
- Ctrl+Shift+P: the Scriptorium command palette. Type what you want to do (“theme”, “pin”, “template”…).
- F1: the editor commands (format, sort lines, fold…). Ctrl+G: go to a line. Ctrl+Tab: next tab.
Search
- Ctrl+F find in the file, Ctrl+H replace. The buttons in the search bar turn on case, whole word and regular expressions.
- Ctrl+Shift+F: find in all files of the open folder (text or regular expression). Click a result to jump to the line.
Write faster
- Code snippets (language extensions): type the start of the name, Tab to accept and jump to the next field.
- HTML abbreviations:
ul>li*3then Tab gives the full list. - Multiple cursors: Ctrl+D (next word), Alt+click. Lines: Alt+↑ / Alt+↓ to move, Ctrl+/ to comment.
- The whole list: Keyboard shortcuts.
Pin your work folders
- Open a folder, then click the pin at the top of the explorer: it appears in the left bar as a colored folder with its initial.
- Hover to see its name and path; click to go there. Right-click: rename, change color, show in Explorer, unpin. Up to 12 folders.
Start a project from a template
- With a folder open: File › “New from Template…”. Choose the template (web page, FiveM resource, Python script… depending on installed extensions), give it a name: the files are created, nothing is ever overwritten.
Settings
- Ctrl+, or the icon at the bottom of the left bar: language (Automatic, Français, English), theme (Arcanes dark or light, Black, White, high contrast, plus those from extensions), font and size, indentation, word wrap, minimap, whitespace display, auto save, remote images in the preview, update check.
- Changing the language also changes the menus right away. Editor texts (search, suggestions…) follow on the next launch.
Updates
- Installed through Arcanes Store: it tells you and installs the new version.
- Installed another way (by downloading the Setup): Scriptorium checks by itself, at most once a day, whether a newer version exists (one request to this site, no data sent). If so, an “Update” button appears at the bottom right: it opens the download page. Help › “Check for Updates…” does it on demand. Can be turned off in Settings.
Where is my data?
- Settings, session and installed extensions are in
%APPDATA%\Scriptoriumon your PC. Nothing is sent anywhere: the only connections are the extensions catalog (when you open the Extensions tab) and the update check, to this site.
